Sunday 28th November 2010 Leicester Open Contest
This year the Rolls Royce Derby Band once again entered the Leicester own choice contest. A cold and frosty day meant that the band had to thaw out the band room before even playing a note with temperatures plummeting to -5 over night. Last year we won the fourth section and due to our promotion into third section nationally meant that the bands we faced were going to be of a much higher standard. The band chose to play ‘3 Saints’ by Goff Richards a complex and testing piece with many difficult obstacles to over come throughout the work. The band was drawn number 5 of 7 which gave us plenty of time to relax after our rehearsal and before the performance.
The band knew they had to play well and played a solid and musical rendition with many highlights with the adjudicator Mr. Derek Southcott writing in his comments ‘'you captured the essence of this piece and there were many quality moments’'. On leaving the stage we only had to wait for two bands and then the results were in.
Third Section:
1. Rushden Windmill (John Fletcher) - 193
2. Rolls Royce (Derby) (Graham Cardwell) - 190
3. Fulham (Simon Jones) - 189
4. Hucknall & Linby M.C. (Paul Whyley) - 188
5. Daventry Brass (Nigel Howard) - 187
6. Weston Brass (Tony Osborne) - 186
7. Long Eaton Silver Prize (Sharon Stansfield) - 185
Mr. Southcott commented on the high standard of performance in the third section this year with many memorable and enjoyable performances. The band was elated with our result and is now looking forward to the Christmas season of concerts ahead of us.
The band would also like to thank Kevin and Sarah from the Melton band (cornet and timpani) and Alan (cornet) from Long Eaton Band.
